Exercise Tiger 1944, was a large-scale dress rehearsal for the D-Day landings, off the Slapton Sands in England , that went horribly wrong. You forgot to mention there were only 600 mens including childrens and women and they fought for weeks with nearly 6thousand soldiers with superior weapons including the later summonned reinforcement. At last British Army blocked the water sources but the gokhalis still fought for 4days without food and water until they were 75 left. Casualty from British side were higher than 1500death and 1000 injured including the slaves soldiers from india.

I am 71 years old right now so when I was young there were so many WWII veterans that I would run into them all the time. My father would tell me that so and so was in Patton's 3rd Army or that so and so was on a destroyer in the Pacific. Now we have only a handful left. When I think of their sacrifice it brings tears to my eyes that we can never adequately thank these people for what they did for us, what they did for the world. I am so proud of each and every one of them whether they be from the US, Canada, Britain, France, Poland.......or the myriad nations that took part in the Allied cause. I want them to know that I thank them and think about them often, very often and when I am traveling abroad I do try to see some of the places where they fought and to the cemeteries where they rest. God bless them.

Thank you for that great story of Richard Todd. On another video I saw, in The Longest Day, Richard Todd wore the beret that he wore on the 6th of June, 1944 at Pegasus Bridge. In the photo that you used showing him in The Longest Day, he is playing Major Howard, but the man with the binoculars next to him is Lieutenant Richard Todd. I love that type of information, it just enriches the stories so much. God bless Richard Todd, John Howard, all the British Soldiers and everyone who took part in the invasion as well as everyone who played a.part in the Allied effort in World War II. God bless them all.

My dad was in the merchant navy on a ship moored up in London docks where they filmed a lot of scenes including getting on the canoes and the German gun boat scene. As a kid he used to tell me the story of leaning overboard and watching the filming. He his no longer with us but many years later I did find a bunch of pictures he took at the time. Happy memories. Thank you.

What incredibly brave and resourceful men and women! The true story is even more impressive, even if not as cinematic, because they pulled it off without firing a shot. The enemy was totally left in the dark, literally!

Patrick O'Brian makes no secret of his sources, going so far as to note that he has had to make the fiction less remarkable than the history. The facts in Cochrane's case are too remarkable at times to make for believable fiction. But his 20 volume Aubrey/Maturin series rises above the category of historical fiction. They are of literary quality. As some have noted, they can be viewed as Jane Austin (whom he greatly admired) for men 😂

I just subscribed to your magnificent channel. Learning the details about the Rorke's Drift defenders has been a revelation since I've been a lifelong fan of the film ZULU. And I still love it. Still, knowing the truth and full scale of what happened there is important. So thank you. I attended a small boarding school outside Chicago and, to my delight, our school song was to the tune of Men of Harlech.

@@TheHistoryChap I remember hearing from a person who was there. Name of Holloway. In 1940 men were recruited in S. Africa but they were to be trained in Kenya for the Abyssinia Campeign and as a result many had minimal weapon training. They were put ashore near the northern tip and faced the French Foreign Legion, who, at that time were unsure whose side they were on. As I recall they suffered+-400 casualties.

In actuality, it wasn't a German Panzer 4 which had first greeted the 6th Airborne in response to the opening of Operation Tonga. The British troops believed it was and the darkness and smoke of battle concealed the fact that the machine they were fighting was in fact a light armored Marder mobile assault gun.
